SWHPN Conference Committee Update: #SWHPN22 to be held in Santa Fe April 24-26

Continuing our blog series of updates from SWHPN's committees, our latest update is from the SWHPN Conference Committee. As one of SWHPN's longest-running committees, this group is responsible for all aspects of the organization's signature annual Assembly that, pre-COVID, brought together hundreds of social work professionals from across the country for several days of professional development, collaboration-building, and networking.

The committee helps choose the theme; solicits and reviews abstracts towards building the conference program; reviews applications for the annual awards; and assists with other details that go into pulling off a successful event. Obviously, the committee faced immense challenges in early March 2020, as we watched COVID cases rise in the United States just weeks before the conference was to take place in San Diego, California. Having successfully pivoted to an online Summit series last year and this year, we've been eagerly discussing when it might be safe to gather together in person, and what that type of event might look like.

We are thrilled to announce that after several months of planning, we are looking forward to meeting in-person again in April 24-26, 2022, in Santa Fe, New Mexico! The Conference Committee, and larger SWHPN Board, has gone through numerous deliberations and careful consideration to arrive at this decision. Once a decision was made to look at the feasibility of holding an in-person event, given the high rate of vaccinations among healthcare workers, we began to evaluate possible locations. For the past seven years of in-person events, SWHPN has held our General Assembly in the same city as AAHPM and HPNA, essentially building a week-long series of conferences dedicated to hospice and palliative care professionals. However, when looking at the possibility of Nashville in 2022, there was some concern among Conference Committee and SWHPN Board members that included: the high price of hotel rooms for attendees; an inability to easily cancel the event if an outbreak of COVID were to occur in Nashville soon beforehand; and an awareness that statewide politics in Tennessee could cause concern and possible harm among our members. For all of these reasons, we felt it best to look at other locations for our 2022 event.

We are now tasked with figuring out how to build a conference program that delivers high-quality content for attendees; builds in plenty of time for catching up and in-person brainstorming that we've missed over the past 18 months; and includes some components of online accessibility for attendees to participate virtually. It's a tall order, but the SWHPN Conference Committee is robustly tackling all of the planning necessary to ensure a safe and successful event. We look forward to sharing more details with you in the coming weeks and months as we build the program, as well as formally announce our 2022 Call for Abstracts.

We look forward to hopefully seeing you in person in April!

You will love Santa Fe - the people and cultures, mountains, the architecture, the food. Bring your walking shoes and hiking boots.

I'm SOOO excited for an in person event! I greatly appreciate all of the consideration you put into the location regarding cost and safety/well-being of members attending.
